Café Host / Counter Service

Responsibilities

• Take orders and serve café guests at counter
• Prepare basic coffee drinks and Oaxacan specialty beverages — atole, tejate, champurrado
• Serve local pastries and café food items alongside beverages
• Welcome both international food tourists and local Oaxacans
• Share basic knowledge of Oaxacan beverage traditions when guests ask

Requirements

• No formal barista training required
• Knowledge of and pride in Oaxacan food culture
• Friendly personality
• Basic English for international guests

About the role

The cultural first contact. For many international food tourists, the café counter in Oaxaca is their first conversation about Oaxacan food culture. The host who can explain what atole is, or why tejate is significant, or why the coffee they just ordered came from mountains two hours away — is delivering cultural education through café service.
