Course Superintendent Assistant

Responsibilities

• Support the Course Superintendent with daily agronomic program execution across the 18-hole operation: scheduling crew rotations, overseeing fairway and green maintenance quality standards, and communicating any agronomic issues to the superintendent in real time
• Manage the maintenance crew schedule: crew of 15–25 groundskeepers across full-time and seasonal roles; coordinate daily task assignments, ensure the mowing sequence is aligned with tee time schedules, and manage overtime during peak season
• Lead the course's IPM (Integrated Pest Management) program: identify turf disease, insect pressure, and nematode activity, prepare the spray schedule for superintendent approval, and supervise the application crew for safety compliance
• Coordinate with the resort's golf operations team: communicate course condition updates to the pro shop and Director of Golf; manage play-disruption notifications during maintenance operations (aeration, overseeding, etc.)
• Manage the course's agronomic input budget: fertilizer, chemical, sand, and seed inventory management; purchase requisitions; supplier coordination
• Lead the annual or biennial overseeding program for winter color: Los Cabos courses overseed Bermuda fairways with perennial ryegrass in October–November for winter green-up, requiring the superintendent assistant to manage the transition from primary to overseeded turf

Requirements

• Golf course management degree or equivalent GCSAA-pathway qualification
• 3+ years golf course maintenance experience, ideally in arid environments
• Crew supervision and agronomic scheduling
• English and Spanish bilingual — the Los Cabos golf industry operates bilingually
• Strong agronomic diagnostic ability across the full range of desert turfgrass challenges

About the role

The Los Cabos Superintendent Assistant who comes in at 3:30am to check the overnight irrigation log, who catches a stuck valve that would have dried out two greens overnight, who has the issue resolved and the greens syringe-corrected before the crew arrives at 4am — is doing the 3:30am version of agronomy that determines whether the course is excellent or merely adequate. The superintendent's course is only as good as the person who holds the operational detail when the superintendent isn't there.
