Golf Course Groundskeeper — Desert Turf Specialist

Responsibilities

• Maintain Bermuda or Paspalum fairways and greens in an extreme arid environment: turf management in Los Cabos requires precise irrigation scheduling to compensate for extremely high evapotranspiration rates (ET can reach 9–10mm/day in summer) and prevent the soil-surface temperature spikes that stress turfgrass in July–September
• Execute daily greens maintenance to luxury resort standard: mowing at 3–4mm, rolling, cup placement, and stimpmeter monitoring; Los Cabos resort courses target 10.5–11.5 stimpmeter — desert firmness means the greens can run fast even at slightly higher cut heights
• Manage the course's aggressive irrigation system with desalinated water: the mineral content and salinity of Baja California water sources requires regular leaching protocols to prevent salt accumulation in the root zone; manage the system's bi-weekly flush cycles per the superintendent's schedule
• Manage wind damage on the course: the Los Cabos coastal and arroyo corridors experience sustained wind that deposits sand, displaces bunker sand, and physically stresses turf; daily post-wind course assessment and restoration is a consistent job requirement
• Apply the desert-adapted IPM program: Bermuda in desert conditions is susceptible to specific stress patterns during extreme summer heat — recognize early signs of Bermuda dormancy, heat stress, and nematode activity and report to the superintendent immediately
• Assist with the transition zones between turf and natural desert landscape: Los Cabos courses are designed to integrate with native Baja desert vegetation — ocotillo, cardon cactus, agave — and maintaining the boundary between irrigated turf and native vegetation is both an agronomic and aesthetic responsibility

Requirements

• Golf course grounds maintenance experience; arid or desert turf management experience strongly preferred
• Irrigation system operation in high-demand low-rainfall environments
• Physical fitness for outdoor work in Los Cabos heat and wind
• Equipment operation — greens mowers, fairway units, and utility vehicles
• Spanish native; English functional for resort communication

About the role

The Los Cabos greens crew who works through July — who mows at 4:30am to avoid the 8am desert heat, who adjusts the syringe cycle mid-morning when the Cortez wind picks up and the surface temperature starts reading 42°C at the soil level, who rolls back into the equipment barn at noon — is managing turfgrass at the edge of what's agronomically feasible in terms of climate. The course surviving a Baja summer at quality is not automatic. It's the result of work done precisely in conditions that actively resist it.
