Cenote & Eco-Garden Specialist

Responsibilities

• Maintain natural-style landscape around cenote access areas: respect and reinforce native plant species, manage invasive growth
• Monitor cenote-adjacent vegetation health: remove aggressive exotic species that threaten cenote margins (taro, non-native grasses, ornamental invasives)
• Apply only SEMARNAT-compliant, biodegradable products in all cenote-adjacent zones — chemical use within 50 meters of cenotes is strictly regulated
• Maintain eco-resort native plant identification signage: update, replace, and coordinate with guides on any species information
• Propagate native Quintana Roo coastal species: chit palm (Thrinax radiata), nanche, zapote — for replanting in disturbed areas
• Lead monthly cenote-edge cleanup: remove debris, maintain natural access paths, assess for any invasive encroachment

Requirements

• Knowledge of Yucatán Peninsula native plant species (or willingness to develop it)
• Understanding of cenote ecosystem sensitivity and chemical restriction zones
• Eco-tourism property experience preferred
• Conservation mindset for cenote-adjacent work

About the role

Managing vegetation around a cenote is one of the most ecologically responsible landscaping roles in the Riviera Maya. The limestone aquifer below feeds one of the longest underground river systems in the world, and what grows (or is allowed to grow) at the cenote margin matters. The gardener who has developed native plant knowledge here, who can identify a chit palm seedling versus an invasive grass, is protecting an irreplaceable ecosystem as part of the daily job.
