Grounds Supervisor — Colonial & Hacienda Hotel Properties

Responsibilities

• Supervise grounds and garden team across colonial and hacienda hotel properties: coordinate 2–4 gardeners; manage scheduling between urban center properties and hacienda outside the city
• Oversee Yucatecan heat management in landscape: prioritize shade tree health and structural shade planting; manage irrigation schedules to maintain plant hydration through peak dry-hot period (March–May)
• Direct cistern water management for colonial properties relying on stored water: schedule irrigation efficiently to extend water supply through dry months; track cistern levels and coordinate water delivery when needed
• Manage native plant program for hacienda properties: oversee planting and care of native Yucatecan species — ceiba, chukum, Ramon, henequén — as part of cultural heritage landscape program
• Coordinate cenote-adjacent landscape management at hacienda properties: SEMARNAT compliance for chemical use near cenotes; maintain natural vegetation buffers at cenote access points
• Prepare for high-season guest volume: November–April winter season brings maximum occupancy to Mérida's boutique hotel market; coordinate team on pre-season refresh and maintenance intensification

Requirements

• 4+ years landscape management in Yucatán Peninsula climate or comparable extreme-heat environment
• Native Yucatecan plant species knowledge
• Cistern water management and irrigation planning in water-scarce conditions
• Hacienda estate coordination including inter-property travel
• Team management and scheduling ability

About the role

Supervising grounds in Mérida means making critical decisions during the worst weeks of March and April — when temperatures are at their peak before the rains arrive and the dry stored water in the cisterns is running low. Which plants get the limited irrigation, which shade structures need emergency cloth protection, which exposed plantings need to be moved under cover — those decisions preserve thousands of pesos in plant stock and keep the property looking maintained through the most stressful climate period of the year. That triage ability is what the supervisor's experience is for.
