San Miguel de Allende

MXN 13,500 – 20,000 / monthFull-time, permanent

Fixed monthly

Responsibilities

  • Lead hotel garden team: supervise 2–4 gardeners and seasonal event support staff on garden maintenance and event preparation schedules
  • Manage rose garden program: annual pruning calendar (November–December reset, deadheading program through the growing season), rose feeding schedule, fungal disease management specific to SMA's semi-arid temperate climate
  • Direct structural plant training programs: bougainvillea arch and wall espalier management, jasmine wall coverage, fruit tree espalier in formal garden sections — multi-year plant training projects
  • Coordinate events calendar preparation: lead team through pre-event landscape refresh for weddings, cultural events, and corporate gatherings — peak wedding season (October–December, March–May) requires near-continuous events preparation
  • Manage specialist plant procurement from SMA's nursery network and from specialist rose and perennial suppliers — SMA has an active international horticultural community that sources unusual heritage roses, climbing plants, and formal garden perennials
  • Develop and present annual garden maintenance plan to hotel ownership or management: SMA's owner-operators are typically closely involved in garden decisions
  • Direct cold-season frost protection program: January–February minimum temperatures can approach 3–5°C; tender plants require protection, irrigation systems require management to avoid freeze damage

Work environment

Boutique hotel and events venue grounds supervision in San Miguel de Allende. Formal garden management in one of Mexico's most demanding horticultural environments, with major events calendar responsibility through both wedding seasons.

About the role

San Miguel's wedding season puts the garden supervisor's work on display in a way that almost no other hospitality role does. The rose garden that serves as the ceremony backdrop, the bougainvillea arch under which the couple exchanges vows, the walled garden that fills with 200 guests for the reception — every element of that setting was under the supervisor's care in the weeks before. A garden at its peak on the right day is a management achievement, not an accident.
