Colonial boutique hotel, Oaxaca Centro Histórico

Oaxaca

MXN 7,500 – 11,000 / monthFull-time, permanent

Responsibilities

  • Maintain colonial hotel paint finishes: Oaxacan earth tones (deep greens, burnt ochre, terracotta, warm cream) in lime-compatible or period-appropriate systems
  • Care for Oaxacan green cantera stone elements: protective treatment, joint maintenance, surface cleaning without damaging the stone's characteristic color
  • Restore and maintain carved wooden elements: heavy colonial-style doors, corridor columns, wooden ceiling vigas, hand-carved furniture
  • Apply rainy-season mold-prevention treatment — Oaxaca's May–October rains require preparation of exterior surfaces before wet season onset
  • Handle interior carpentry repairs in colonial guest rooms: furniture restoration, wardrobe maintenance, bathroom wooden elements
  • Coordinate with artisan restoration specialists when work intersects with INAH-protected architectural elements

Requirements

  • Painting and carpentry experience; colonial or heritage building environment
  • Green cantera stone care knowledge — not a standard skill but learnable in the Oaxacan context
  • Period color palette sensitivity — Oaxacan earth tones are distinctive and guests notice when they're wrong
  • Rainy season exterior preparation awareness

  • Staff canteen
  • Training in stonework maintenance and colonial finishes
  • Uniform provided

Work environment

Colonial boutique hotel in Oaxaca's historic center. Heritage painting and carpentry in a city where the built environment is as much of the tourism attraction as the food, mezcal, and artisan culture.

About the role

Oaxaca City's green cantera stone is one of the most geologically distinctive building materials in Mexico — it's specific to the Oaxacan valley, quarried from deposits that gave the city its characteristic color. The painter-carpenter who learns to care for it — who understands how to clean it, seal it, and repair it without damaging the color that makes it special — has developed knowledge that is geographically unique to Oaxaca and professionally valuable for as long as the city's boutique hotel market continues to grow.
