Beach Lifeguard

Responsibilities

• Monitor Caribbean beachfront for resort guests — rip current identification, distressed swimmer recognition, unauthorized boat approaches
• Manage beach flag system — daily wave and current condition assessment, flag color communication to guests
• Enforce safe swimming zone boundaries — buoy line integrity, guest compliance
• Respond to aquatic emergencies in open water — rescue board entry, tow rescue, shore-based assistance
• Coordinate with resort water sports team on safe activity zones
• Conduct daily beach equipment inspection — rescue board, fins, rescue tubes, first aid kit
• Manage jellyfish and marine hazard communication — seasonal Portuguese man-o-war, jellyfish, and sea urchin incidents require guest communication

Requirements

• Valid Cruz Roja or RLSS lifeguard certification — open water endorsement preferred
• Strong ocean swimming ability — rip current management and open water rescue require advanced aquatic competence
• Physical fitness for open water rescue deployment
• Rip current and Caribbean coastal hazard knowledge
• Basic English for guest communication
• Basic first aid and CPR current certification

Work environment

Caribbean beachfront in Cancún Hotel Zone. Open water beach lifeguarding requires different competencies from pool surveillance — dynamic water conditions, longer response distances, and variable marine hazards.

About the role

The guardian of the Caribbean shore. The Cancún beach lifeguard watches the same water every day — and knows it differently than any guest. They know which section of beach has the strongest longshore current on north wind days. They know the exact position where the sandbar drops away. They know that jellyfish appear in the south end of the Hotel Zone beach before they reach the north. That accumulated knowledge — built across hundreds of shifts and thousands of hours of watching the same water — is what makes their response in an emergency both faster and more effective than any untrained rescuer's. It is expert knowledge, earned through presence.
