Ocean & Beach Lifeguard

Responsibilities

• Monitor resort beachfront on Sea of Cortés or Pacific side — significantly different water conditions require different monitoring protocols
• Assess daily sea conditions — swell height, rip current presence, shore break intensity, jellyfish
• Manage beach flag system — Los Cabos beaches require active flag management given rapidly changing Pacific conditions
• Communicate swimming restrictions to guests clearly and consistently — Pacific shore break swimming prohibitions are non-negotiable safety decisions
• Conduct open water rescue — rescue board, fins, tow rescue techniques
• Coordinate with resort water sports operators on safe activity zones
• Maintain rescue equipment and conduct daily readiness checks

Requirements

• Cruz Roja or RLSS lifeguard certification — open water endorsement required
• Advanced ocean swimming ability — Pacific surf rescue requires specific open water competency
• Pacific surf hazard and Sea of Cortés current knowledge — specific to Los Cabos coastal geography
• Physical fitness for surf rescue deployment
• Strong English communication — beach safety information must reach primarily North American guests clearly
• CPR and first aid current

Work environment

Los Cabos beachfront — either Pacific shore or Sea of Cortés depending on resort location. Pacific side lifeguarding is the most technically demanding beach safety environment in Mexican resort hospitality.

About the role

The guardian of the most dangerous beautiful beach in Mexico. The Los Cabos Pacific shore break — the same wave that makes the Arch of Cabo appear in every sunset photograph — is capable of knocking an adult off their feet in knee-deep water and holding them under. The beach lifeguard who stands between 200 luxury guests and that reality — who makes the judgment call about which wave conditions cross the line from caution to prohibition, who enforces that decision with authority and care — is performing a genuinely critical safety function in one of the world's most visited resort destinations.
