Beach & Pool Lifeguard

Responsibilities

• Monitor resort Caribbean beach and pool areas — dual responsibility for many Riviera Maya properties
• Assess and communicate daily Caribbean beach conditions — current patterns, jellyfish advisories, safe swimming zone boundaries
• Maintain beach flag system — consistent color communication for international guests unfamiliar with local conditions
• Enforce pool and beach safety rules across a multilingual guest population — rule communication in English and Spanish minimum
• Respond to aquatic emergencies in both pool and open water environments
• Coordinate with resort water sports team on safe activity zones and motorized water sports separation
• Conduct equipment inspections and water quality checks
• Brief guests on Caribbean swimming conditions — jellyfish seasonal patterns, rip current awareness

Requirements

• Cruz Roja or RLSS lifeguard certification
• Pool and open water competency
• Caribbean coastal hazard knowledge — jellyfish seasonality, longshore current patterns on Playa coastline
• Basic English — essential for multilingual guest safety communication
• Physical fitness for both pool surveillance and open water response
• Current CPR and first aid

The bilingual safety anchor. The Playa del Carmen beach at peak season is one of the most culturally diverse bathing environments on Earth — Italian families, Canadian couples, Argentine groups, Mexican domestic tourists, and North American spring breakers all sharing the same section of Caribbean. The lifeguard who manages safety across that multilingual crowd — who enforces the swim boundary with the Italian family who doesn't speak Spanish, who communicates the jellyfish warning to the Canadian who doesn't notice the Portuguese man-o-war ahead of them — is doing genuinely complex interpersonal safety work.
